Step 1: Research Aeronautical Engineer Career Duties and Education
An Aeronautical Engineer designs and develops aircraft and tests the specifications of the aircraft to make sure it works safely. Aeronautical Engineers also oversee the construction of aircraft and avionics. They use their knowledge of aeronautics, aerodynamics and aircraft structure to create new aircraft for the military and commercial airlines. Aeronautical Engineers can specialize in the design of the aircraft wings, landing gear, avionics or analysis of ground or flight programs the aircraft used in testing. They also supervise the repair of aircraft subsystems for the military or private organizations. Becoming an Aeronautical Engineer requires a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from an accredited-ABET program.
Step 2: Prepare for an Aeronautical Engineering Education while still in High School
Aspiring Aeronautical Engineers should take advanced placement courses in algebra, calculus, trigonometry, biology, chemistry, physics, English and humanities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), www.bls.gov. High school students should achieve good grades to be accepted into college to pursue an undergraduate degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
Step 3: Earn a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering
Students should enroll in a college that has an Engineering degree program that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Students should take courses in engineering principles, math, physical and life sciences. Students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering in about four years.
Step 4: Do a Co-Op or Internship During College
Aeronautical Engineering majors should consider participating in their school's internship or co-op program. These internships and co-ops provide a real world experience for students to apply classroom knowledge in the field and network with professionals, according to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, www.aiaa.org.
Step 5: Get a Job as an Aeronautical Engineer
The BLS reports that Aeronautical Engineers can find many job opportunities in the military because of its demand for aeronautical projects. Aeronautical Engineers can also find employment with military subcontractors.
